This training is an introduction to self and peer rescue and will involve: use of throwline (you will need to bring or borrow one) self rescue recovering kit safely crossing fast shallow water safely working together and communicating It's a lot of fun and it might save your life. The venue is likely to be at Lynmouth. The day will not be in kayaks but bank based. A drysuit is good but not essential. A wet suit will be OK. You will of course need lunch and a drink. Email Pete if you want a place. Numbers are limited.
18th November, 2012
Plan A is not looking too good with river levels expected to be low. Only light rain on Friday night. So Katherine and I want to propose something different as Plan B. We go to Croyde and launch through 2' surf. Then go rock hopping along the rocky coast to the tip of Baggy Point and explore the caves. Might find a few promontories to jump off... Then do some surfing before recovering in the Thatch...? If that floats your boat, we will: meet at the Club at 09.00 if you need kit travel to Croyde and meet at 10.00 in the National Trust car park. To find this, drive through Croyde and turn left. The car park is on the right and free to NT members. Bring food and drink; dress for watery fun, though that is entirely optional. Helmets required.

25th May, 2012 - 27th May, 2012
A total of 13 places are available to senior club members for the trip. Anyone wanting to take family or friends will go on a reserve list.
The trip will follow the same format as in 2010 with paddlers and boats being ferried across to Lundy from Ilfracombe on the Friday ( left at 6pm last time) and returning late afternoon on Sunday.
Pete and several others are paddling out and obviously the trip will be weather dependent.
A final decision on the state of the weather will be made by the skipper of the boat, hopefully on the Wednesday two days before the trip.
At the moment there are plenty of camping spaces available for the above dates and I suggest we do as last year and wait until the Wednesday beforehand before booking. It's a risk but otherwise we lose all our money.
If the trip is postponed we will try to rearrange for a June date. Unfortunately the camp site is full for Pete and Clive's reserve date of June 23rd/24th.
Prices are up on 2010 but it's still cheaper to have a charter. Boat cost has risen to £700
Price based on 13 people going....£77 per person:
· £54 there and back on the boat
· £18 for 2 nights camping ( per person)
· £5 landing fee unless you are a member of the National Trust
· Plus food and drink!
The trip is on a first come basis. If we can't fill the boat there will be no trip and please, only sign up if you are a definite. Deposit of £25 will secure your place.

Calling all junior paddlers, who like kayaking in the pool but would like to progress to some moving water.....
On Sunday 8th January, we are organising an introduction to moving water, aimed at younger paddlers. This will be held at one location, rather than a river trip. The place, at the moment, is at Puffing Billy on the Torridge, near Torrington. There we can use the river flow under the bridges to get used to crossing moving currents, breaking into eddies and using support strokes. We might also do some rescue training with throw lines, which is great fun.
It's a safe location, and you can get off when you have had enough. There is even a pub for parents to wait in if the weather is rough.
You will need a wetsuit (or drysuit) with a cag, a helmet and spraycover. The club has a selection of these to loan, though choice of wetsuits is limited.
If you want to come, you need to:

20th November, 2011
Trip cancelled due to lack of interest and water!
A proficient level river trip being run by Chris Nias and Clive Doe. It is likely that this will be either the Dart Loop or a boofing session on a short section of the Lyn. However, there is NO RAIN forecast for the rest of the week. If there is no rain, then it is likely that the trip will be cancelled as there won't be anything worth paddling. We will update you on our plans on Wednesday evening. See the winter trip programme for more details about proficient level trips and if it might be appropriate for you.

13th November, 2011
An improvers level river trip.
Rivers are low with little rain in prospect of rain.
Current plan: The Dart Loop, Gd 2 at these levels so all welcome. An ideal chance to become familiar with the Loop, without the powerful water.
This is a great bit of river because there are plenty of playspots and eddies and all significant rapids are followed by a slow pool for gathering swimmers / kit, so no painful long swims.
Meeting at Homebase at 8.15am, or Newbridge carpark at 10.00am. Bring a flask and lunch.
Alternative: If the weather changes or we have fewer than 4 takers by Friday 5pm, we will arrange an alternative river or a surf.
See the winter trip programme for more details about improver trips and if it might be right for you.
See the forum link below for contact details.
12th November, 2011
In recent years we have run introductory courses to swift water rescue, though cannot certificate them. It all paid dividends when Chivs had his out of boat experience this year on the fearsome Gyr. Training clicked in and all the bits were rapidly recovered, including Steve!
This autumn we can do a day of revision, practice and development for paddlers who expect to venture onto fast water this season. If you are new to it that won’t matter, though you will need the following:
*( we will have some spares)
The day will start with some land based drills and progress to river bank work. Expect to get very wet. It’s a lot of fun and it may save someone’s life. We will not be canoeing but will do some boat recovery.
Venue to be decided but likely to be East Lyn, just above Lynmouth. If river levels are too low then we will need to go where there is water. Time is likely to be meet at venue at 10.00, finish by 15.00.
Places are limited, so book yours by getting in touch with Pete Thorn.
6th November, 2011
A proficient level river trip. The idea is to run the first club trip on the Tavey which runs through Tavistock. There are 2 sections on the Tavey we can run depending on the groups over all ability. See the winter trip programme for more details about proficient level trips and if it might be appropriate for you. More details are available on the forum. Please make sure you get in touch with the trip leaders by Friday to register your interest.

29th October, 2011
An improvers level river trip. Unfortunately this trip has had to be cancelled due to a lack of available river leaders. Proficient Senior paddlers should check the forum for an alternative. See the winter trip programme for more details about upcoming improver trips and if they might be right for you.
22nd October, 2011
A proficient level river trip. See the winter trip programme for more details about proficient level trips and if it might be appropriate for you.
Katherine and Pete are leading a trip on Saturday, but have yet to decide where! The favoured option is to do a boofing class on the East Lyn (how to run steeper drops) but the levels are pretty low with little rain forecast. This will involve a walk in and out rather than a river descent.
If that won't work we suggest some adventure in river boats out of Lee Bay, going towards Bull Point. There are lots of opportunities for rock hopping with a swell running. If you are keen, let Pete or Katherine know by email. It won't be a long day but we will try to make it challenging and fun for those who want it.
16th October, 2011
An improvers level river trip. See the winter trip programme for more details about improver trips and if it might be right for you. Due to low water levels it will be on the Exe. These rivers are suitable for anyone who has paddled on the Torridge without too much difficulty.
Trip now full unless you are experienced enough to take care of yourself on the river.
Anyone who needs to borrow a club boat or equipment will need to contact Andrew Toon to arrange a pick up. (Juniors, as you don't drive, if you need help getting and transporting boats, contact either Kevin or Chris and they'll happily lend you a hand.)
We'll meet at the Barnstaple Homebase at 9am or Morrisons, Tiverton at 9.45am; again, juniors if you are struggling for a lift, let us know and we may be able to arrange for you to come over with one of the adults. Please let the organisers know if you will not be meeting at Barnstaple.
Looking forward to seeing you at the weekend!
12th October, 2011
Pool session at West Buckland School. Split into two one-hour sessions:

Please note there is no parking directly outside the pool. Please park in one of the nearby car parks.
If you need boats or equipment for the session please get in touch in advance to arrange.
8th October, 2011
Water levels dependent, this will be a trip on the Dart Loop.
The water levels are low with only light drizzle between now and Saturday.
At these levels, this is a grade 2 paddle, so open to all who have been on moving water. There are a few spots where we can practice basic white water manoeuvres such as ferry gliding, break ins/outs and possibly boofing.
Meeting points are Homebase carpark at 8.15am, or Newbridge at 10.00am
Please bring a packed lunch. If you need club equipment please liaise with Andrew Toon.
Please contact Colin Steinlecher by Friday 10pm if you wish to come (see email for contact details).
Depending on experience of the group, we may have to limit numbers.
The loop is largely grade 2 with some grade 3 rapids and some good spots for practicing core techniques. Each grade 3 rapid has a safe slow flowing stretch below it, so swims are usually short and painless. A good river to build up your confidence.2nd October, 2011
Bideford Triathlon. A few more volunteers needed for this event. We helped at this event last year and a donation of £100 was made to the club. The race will start at approx 9.30 am (High tide). Arrangements to follow. Find out more about the triathlon at www.bidefordtriathlon.co.uk.
24th September, 2011
Hospice Charity Swim at Roadford Reservoir. Volunteers needed for safety cover. Further details to follow.
17th September, 2011
Sea kayaking Day with Pete. At the end of May we held an introductory day in horrible conditions at Watermouth Castle, which everyone seemed to enjoy. Hoping for calmer weather, we offer a further chance to play about in long pointy boats.
Hopefully we can undertake a journey this time, with some rock hopping and landing on some remote beach. Venue will depend on conditions but perhaps going out from Lee Bay near Ilfracombe. Not a trip for complete novices, but all those who came last time will be fine. Times would be on the water about 10.30, returning by 15.30. You will need a wet or dry suit, helmet and the usual paddling gear, plus lunch and plenty to drink. Boats will be supplied but bring your own if it is a sea kayak.
Numbers will be limited so early application advised.

(We'll be there around 6.45.) If it's flat as it has been for the last couple of days we can always go for a paddle around the headland. If anyone can help with transport from the centre it would be much appreciated. If you need to collect a boat please let me know so I can arrange for Andrew to open up the centre.
14th August, 2011

Trip as part of the summer two star course. Day long session for those signed up to the two star course. The plan is to take kayaks to Exeter canal and spend the day on there honing the kayak skills of the 2 star. If we fill 2 cars and put boats on both the price of fuel per person should only be about £5 ish. I plan to leave the boat house no later than 08:00 so if you need kit can you meet us there at 07:30.
14th July, 2011
Evening paddle on the Torridge potentially from Weare Gifford down to Bideford. High tide at 6.15pm.
1st July, 2011 - 3rd July, 2011
The trip will follow the same format as last year with paddlers and boats being ferried across to Lundy from Ilfracombe on the Friday ( left at 6pm last year) and returning late afternoon on Sunday. You will need to be available for both dates in case of bad weather.
Prices are slightly up on last year but it's still cheaper to have a charter. Boat cost has risen to £640.
Price based on 12 people going....£81
£54 there and back on the boatThe trip is on a first come basis. If we can't fill the boat there will be no trip and please, only sign up if you are a definite. Payement will be required to secure your place.
Places are still available. Please contact Sue Ambler if you are interested in attending.
1st July, 2011

First session of the Two Star Course. The general plan for the first session is to get in the water, see where everyone is skill wise and talk about future dates for the course. We want everyone to be able to make the dates so want to discuss it before we make any final decisions. i.e. doing whole day sessions on the weekends with less evening sessions or more evening sessions with no full days depending on what works for people and based on tide times etc.
Please contact Jody / Nicole if you are interested in joining this Two Star Course.

Fifteen club members will set out this weekend, for a week's paddling,to the attractive town of Entraygues sur Truyere, situated on the confluence of the rivers Lot and Truyere in the Southern Central Massif.
The region is not well known but is very beautiful, with steep wooded valleys, ancient settlements and moderate white water. The local town is Entraygues sur Truyere and you can have a look at it here http://www.tourisme-entraygues.com/fr/loisirs/canoe-kayac-rafting.php
The paddling is moderate and safe, with simple rapids and long pools below. There are some nice play waves and one big bouncy constriction rapid to encourage skills development, so not boring. There are some long remote stretches on this river so some memorable day trips available. There is never a guarantee of good flows but this early in the season, with dam controlled releases, the paddling should be good.
