Announcements

  • Light at the end of the tunnel

The Covid 19 restrictions start to lift from 29th March, so we hope to get a limited club programme going after that. The rules allow six people to meet outdoors, so you can see that group paddles will be possible. All group trips will need to be run in Covid-secure ways, which we are all familiar with already.    What we have in mind is that a designated leader plus assistant will lead up to four people. This fits well with the remit for British Canoeing’s ratio of one leader to four people.    Sea kayaking   Our plan is for trips to take place on Sundays, subject to weather, providing easy/moderate trips. Many people have their own boats but club boats and kit are available. Numbers will be limited by the numbers of leaders and assistants available, but a weekly programme is what we aim for.   For paddlers wanting to progress their sea kayak skills, we hope to start running Thursday evening sessions again, aimed at achieving the Sea Kayak Award (old 3 Star).    For paddlers already very competent and working towards Leader/Coach awards, a peer paddle system will enable them to work together at days/times which suit them.    River kayaking   Trips on the Lower Barle will hopefully be organised in April although a lot of rain is needed!   Trips on the easy sections of the estuary will take place throughout summer. All river trips are subject to water levels, weather, tides and safety cover. Maximum number on a trip will be six.  Surfing  Emma, our surf expert, will be running separate sessions for beginners and improvers on Monday evenings. Trips will be advertised by email to all club members. Pete Thorn and Pat Williams

  • Covid -19 Risk Assessment Appendix and resumption of club paddling

The Club will be starting a phased return to paddling on Thursday June 18th with weekly sea kayaking training sessions. Following British Canoeing guidelines the Club has produced a Covid-19 Risk Assessment Appendix, below, which should be read in conjunction with the existing Sea Kayaking Risk Assessment or alongside all of the other risk assessments at http://www.bidefordcanoeclub.co.uk/downloads/ Course participants must read and confirm they accept it as a guiding document and will abide by its guidance.

  • Summer Programme 2019

MAY 2019 Regular features and one-off events are listed below. Details will show up on the Club Facebook page or email as we go along. REGULAR FEATURES Monday – Beginners’ Course    Evenings from 20 May through to late July. This aims to equip people new to paddling with all the basic skills and strokes you need to be a competent member of a group on placid water. (Fully booked) Thursday – Indoor Pool Sessions  Indoor pool sessions at West Buckland School resume in September, for intro work and rolling etc. Email to members at the beginning of the week that a session is on. Thursday – Sea kayaking summer training leading to the Sea Kayak and Sea Kayak Coastal award. Commences in late June. Contact Paul Greenway for more information. Friday – Kayak Surfing  Friday evenings at Sandymere Beach, Westward Ho! or other local beaches depending on tide times. Introduction to kayak surfing when conditions are good and waves are small. Otherwise a great opportunity for the Club to meet and cream some waves. In the case of no waves there will usually be a short coastal paddle option.
